The big race weekend has come and gone … the 2010 Kelowna Apple Triathlon is in the books! A year of working towards this date has paid off, with a very successful, record-setting event this past weekend. It started on Friday evening with the Aquathon (I assisted as the lead cyclist) and the 1.5km open water swim, continued on Saturday with all the kids races and the short adult triathlon (Try-a-Tri) followed by the 5km swim, and finished yesterday with the Sprint and Olympic age group races as well as the Elite races. On Saturday, I was assigned as an official mainly to the swim starts, while yesterday I worked at the Elite Athlete check-in and the start pontoon. I enjoyed working again with a great group of officials who had traveled from all over Canada to help us with the Canadian National Championships here in town.
I also got to race the Olympic race yesterday morning. Despite the lack of training (very little cycling, few runs, alas much swimming), the race went well and I felt good the whole way – that means including the run which doesn’t happen often! It was windy but otherwise great conditions for a race. I enjoyed it all along and hope I can maintain that feeling to the half ironman in Washington in September.
We not only had a record number of entrants for our race, we also had a record number of volunteers! I hope they all had a great time (especially the ones I know and recruited … 🙂 ). This week is just as busy with a trip to Slocan and Ironman Canada on Sunday … another full day of officiating. It will be great to see all my friends racing. Good luck to everybody!!
